From Lily of the Valley to the Big Stage: Mzizi’s Journey to Musical Success.
Music has the power to transform lives, and few stories exemplify this better than Msizi’s. Growing up at Lily of the Valley Children’s Village, Mzizi always had a deep love for music. Today, he is a renowned professional musician in South Africa, making waves in the industry with his soulful voice, powerful songwriting, and inspiring story.
We caught up with him this week as he prepares to release his latest album, The Ascension, at the end of February.
Msizi shared his journey—from his childhood at Lily to the challenges of stepping into the real world and finally breaking into the music industry.

Q. Mzizi, tell us about where you are now and what you're working on?
I’m currently based in Johannesburg, working full-time as a professional musician. Right now, I’m in the final stages of marketing my new album, The Ascension, which will be released at the end of this month. God has blessed me with incredible opportunities—I’ve been signed to a music distribution company, and I’ve had the chance to work on several TV commercial soundtracks, including a recent project with Samsung.

Q. You grew up at Lily of the Valley. How old were you when you arrived, and how long did you stay?
I came to Lily when I was just seven months old after my mother sadly passed away giving birth to me. I spent my entire childhood there and only left when I was 19 years old.
Q. What does Lily of the Valley mean to you today?
Lily is home. It’s where I grew up, where I was loved, and where I was given a chance to dream. Without the incredible staff, house mothers, and volunteers who poured their hearts into me, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Even though I had no biological family, I was never alone at Lily. The love and support I received there shaped me into the person I am now.

Q. How was the transition from Lily to life outside the village?
Leaving Lily was one of the hardest moments of my life. When you grow up in a place filled with love and support, stepping out into the world alone can be terrifying. Many of my peers had family members to turn to, but I had no one. That was tough.
But I had faith—I had to be mentally strong and trust that God had a plan for me. Lily had given me so much, including opportunities to grow in my music, and I knew I had to keep pushing forward.

Q. Lily played a key role in supporting your musical talent. What was the biggest opportunity you received there?
Lily recognized my passion and talent early on and invested in my future. They sent me to Creative Arts College in Durban, where I studied for three years. That was a game-changer for me! Not only did I refine my musical skills, but I also made key connections in the industry. That led me to move to Johannesburg, where I got my first big break.

Q. What has been your greatest achievement so far?
I’ve been blessed with many milestones. I’ve recorded several albums, and this week, I’m excited to release my latest one, The Ascension. I’ve worked with big brands on commercial soundtracks for TV and radio, and I’ve collaborated with some of South Africa’s top musicians. One of my proudest moments was being part of a double platinum album production.
I’m also grateful for the piano lessons I had at Lily—it’s a skill that has stayed with me and shaped the way I create music today.

Q. Where do you see yourself in the future?
Music is my life. I’d love to see my work reach international audiences and inspire people worldwide. Lately, I’ve really enjoyed working on soundtracks for commercials and films, and I hope to expand further into that space.

Q. Mzizi, thank you so much for sharing your story! Where can people follow your journey and listen to your music?
